Current Preaching Work

Dear Catherine House,

Each of us is called to be a preacher – so let’s share some current preaching, teaching, or other proclamation work that we are currently engaged in. Knowing this can be an encouragement and we can pray for one other.

Share briefly about what you are doing and the context.

My overt preaching is limited. With a change in our youth S.S. format, I am no longer teaching. That leaves children's chapel as my primary opportunity to lead worship and teach a lesson.

I continue to be active in EFM, and my reunion group. I am now able to attend a class on sunday mornings, and of course there is the novice studies.

I view these as opportunities to teach and to share, and also to continue to learn so that I may further come to understand what God has in mind for me, and to be prepared for it. My future ministry is still unknown to me. For now I will continue to try and be open for whatever God has in store for me.

Br. Rick says,

Beginning to teach a class on the Gospel of John starting next week. That's pretty much it for me in the regular, intentional preaching and teaching department. I am a utility infielder on the Lent & Beyond blog, and I have been posting there from time to time when invited by the webmistress. Usually in those posts I am providing a little prayer cover for events such as dicoesan conventions around the country, or various gatherings such as the TEC Executive Council. It makes no difference to me if the group I am praying for is in line with my theological thinking or not. We are to pray for our enemies as well as our friends, and I have come to realize that a prayer for one's enemies is like unto a mortar and rocket attack on the gates of hell.

I lead a weekly class after Wednesday Eucharist where we discuss the upcoming Sunday lectionary texts. We will deviate for Advent and Lent in order to have a focused discipline for each day of the season rather than just the Sunday texts.

As part of the parish stewardship drive we are being asked to give time to the parish. I will volunteer to lead some Sunday adult ed sessions on praying the Daily Offices.

At this point I feel more comfortable teaching rather than preaching, but will get slid into a regular quarterly cycle once the bishop signs my preaching license.

My active teaching ministry has come to a screeching halt for the first time in five years. My EfM group lacked the required six participants so we are "dormant" this year. I anticipate having more than enough in 09/09. I am using the time for more inner spiritual development as that has suffered of late. Your prayers for my continued discernment are appreciated. I have been on the fringe of the desert for the past few weeks and am in need of an oasis.

Peace,

Currently, I preach on a regular basis in the parish in Jamestown, as well as on a regular, but less frequent basis, at the tiny congregations in Valley City and Oakes ND.

I just finished preaching a sermon series on "Dealing with Life's Everyday Problems" starting this Sunday in the evening service I will start preaching through the Book of Jonah.

I'm going to be teaching on "revitalizing dying congregations" again at a diocesan retreat for priests and deacons that is coming up.

I'm also teaching two Bible studies, one with college students going through the book of 1 John, and another with adults on the basics of Christianity using a study written by Bill Hybels.

There are a few more things here and there, but those are some of the major ones right now.

It’s fun to see all of the variety in the responses. We began a new series in adult SS using a resource from Renovare called “A Spiritual Formation Workbook.” Sally and I had done this at home together before springing it on the class. She has taken over the teaching (they like her better) and I get to participate like a regular person. The other activity for me is weekly service and sermon preparation. Sermon prep feels very much like a discipline. I have noted an increased level of courage and confidence with experience (AND knowing that all of you are “out there”). Humbert has been a source of strength for me as well. Bro Phil
